Saturday, June 2: Oliver Swain w/ Quinn Bachand!

The James Bay Market is honored to welcome Oliver Swain to the stage this coming Saturday, June 2! Oliver Swain has spent the last fifteen plus years honing in his craft, and this effort has taken him on a remarkable musical journey. Possessing an extensive and colorful musical history, as a lifetime career musician the projects have been many and always diverse. From the most vulnerable and innocent sounding banjo ditties to the brave and imposing bowed bass, Oliver delivers his own brand of alternative folk and traditional music to the masses with a smile and a twinkle in his eye.

“Oliver Swain is already a well known name in the North American folk music scene, and he eats, sleeps and breathes music, as is evident by his performance. With his pure, finely tuned vocals that have an astonishing range, and his undeniable skill behind a banjo or upright bass, Oliver grabs the attention of all who hear him, and holds it with his enormous sound and stature. He’s shone at the forefront of the WCMA nominated group Outlaw Social, held up the bottom end of The Bills, and even completed a one year stint with Louisiana’s popular Red Stick Ramblers. He’s won awards, supported many well known Canadian musicians, and spearheaded and effort to bring a folk festival back to his hometown of Victoria. Now, with his solo debut In A Big Machine, Oliver is set to wow all who hear it with his stunning vocals, lulling banjo, and audacious upright bass, backed by the amazingly talented Big Machine band. This highly anticipated album sees the culmination of several years touring his own original music throughout Canada, in between being an active member of the Victoria music scene and touring as a sideman overseas with Juno Award winner Toni Childs.” ~VanMusic

At just 15 years of age Victoria born Quinn Bachand already has a reputation as “one of the best Celtic guitar accompanists in the world” (Ashley MacIsaac). Although Quinn plays a range of styles including gypsy-jazz, it is his talents in the world of Celtic music that are drawing the most attention. A focused and intense musician, Quinn has the unique ability to bring out the best in each tune. Quinn adds a contemporary edge to traditional Celtic music; his hard-driving strumming, inventive chord voicing and powerful rhythmic effects make even the most well-worn tunes seem new and exciting.

Quinn’s most recently collaborated as part of Oliver Swain’s Big Machine, performing distinctly unique original, traditional and contemporary pieces that blend a mix of styles including jazz, bluegrass, blues, pop & rock.
